Questioning the Dead by Marcus Coates at Arnos Vale Cemetery

Marcus Coates invited members of the public to submit questions they would like to ask the dead by leaving messages at the cemetery and online.

For Museums at Night, Marcus illuminated some graves and placed speakers around the 45-acre site, which holds the remains of more than 300,000 people, and orchestrated a live performance as darkness fell. A chorus of community members read the questions aloud – some humorous, some poignant – and the audience were also invited to ask their own questions.

The audio was recorded and replayed like an incantation across the cemetery, while visitors took tours around the cemetery and explored a Day of the Dead ofrenda altar created by the local Mexican community in the chapel’s crypt.
