Druids in the Deadhouse by Bedwyr Williams at Somerset House, London

2017 Derek Williams Award, in association with Artes Mundi winning conceptual artist and self-proclaimed ‘arch Arch-Druid’ led a druidic open-mic event in the catacombs below Somerset House. The event started in the Embankment reception room where all participants were invited to change into Druid robes. They were then led by Bedwyr dressed in robes, false beard and clasping home-made staff, around the sunken open-topped gangway to the cellar.

This rarely used space features alcoves in which six young artists had devised playful, interactive interventions loosely themed on druids. The show was hosted by Bedwyr, he recited some of his prose and he adjudged the best alcove artist and open-mic performer.
