THE RITUAL by AOWEN JIN at COMPTON VERNEY
Inspired by Compton Verney’s Designated Collection of Chinese bronzes, many relating to storing and cooking rice, artist Aowen Jin created a massive immersive phosphorescent rice field installation in the Capability Brown chapel, which had never been open to the public before.
Museums at Night visitors explored, rearranged and played with one tonne of UV rice, lit by individual UV torches, and created rice designs and patterns inspired by Chinese calligraphy on the floor of the Adam Hall.
Aowen ran workshops for students from Coventry University’s school of art and design to dye rice together, and invited them to present their own rice artworks to the public as part of the event. The event also included bronze object handling and a talk about creative careers.
